Among the various volcanic phenomena and landscapes, highlights include: The Caldeira and Furna do Enxofre, the latter of which is accessed through a tower with a staircase of 183 steps. The “cathedral” of volcanic cavities in the Azores features a cold water lake and a fumarole with mud, responsible for the smell of sulfur, which refers to the designation of this cavity and recalls its volcanic origin.
